Cats and Dogs Don't Have to Fight Like Cats and Dogs with Tips from @Iams

When we first got Reina, we didn't know how to introduce her to Aries.

Ed and I came up with what seemed like a great idea at the time.

In reality, not so much.

Thankfully, the only thing that got hurt was Aries finger nail and Reina's pride. It could have been much worse and it sure would have been nice to have some help along the way.

The great news is that cats and dogs don't have to fight like cats and dogs with these,

When Bad Haircuts Happen to Good Dogs

I know how Wordless Wednesday posts are supposed to be "wordless" but sometimes wordless turns into a post about a tasty not your average pulled pork sandwich recipe and how not to toilet training.

Besides, I am my Mothers' daughter after all.

Back to my wordless post.

I'm sure when you look at the picture of Uncle Andrew's dog "Bailey" you'll think to yourself, "Isn't she a cute little poodle!"

And you'd be right except that She is a HE and most importantly...

Portrait of Aries the Cat

Aries the Cat is now in week two of the Royal Canin Cats Aging Gracefully Challenge. Given all the positive changes so far, it's no wonder that Royal Canin is the leading cat food for mature cats.

Last week, I wrote about her improved appetite and digestion so this week, I thought that I would focus on her appearance and energy levels.

Royal Canin #CatsAgingGracefully Challenge Starts with Success!

Aries The Cat is my first grown-up pet. Or should I say, I'm her first servant.

The past 17 years have been wonderful and she looks better than most 84-year old ladies! However, there's no denying that she's aged.

When I heard about the Royal Canin Aging Gracefully Challenge, I knew that she deserved to live out the rest of her life in luxury with Royal Canin!

Royal Canin Logo

Since beginning the transition around two weeks ago, Aries has had so many successes! Most importantly, her appetite has increased significantly and her digestion has improved.

Just a fancy saying for her poo looks better.

Meet Wild Animals at Canada's African Lion Safari!

African Lion Safari Entrance Sign

It's been many years since I set eyes on a Lions tonsils or the "presents" that the monkeys left on our car hood, however, I remember our visit and their catchy jingle like it was only yesterday.

Even after all those years, it was a favourite attraction of mine and now The Kids love it too. I'm referring to...

WIN a Week of Summer Camp at Little Ray's Reptile Zoo, #Ottawa, 6/25

Little Ray's Zoo Logo
Does this guy look familiar?

What about his crocodile (or is that an alligator)?

If not, you must have missed our giveaway in April for a Family Pack of tickets to Little Ray's Reptile Zoo.

If you did miss it, no worries because this time, you can win a...

Week for one child at Little Ray's Zoo Camp in Ottawa!

Journeys of The Zoo has been fortunate enough to participate in this giveaway with your HOST Canadian Blog and Co-hosts Ottawa Mommy Club ~ Shannon's View from Here ~ Tales of Mommyhood AND ~ Coffee with Julie.

Note that The Zoo has never been to Little Ray's so we'll let Sandi (from Canadian Blog House) let you know what it's all about.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

I love animals. As a child, I wanted to be a veterinarian when I grew up (this is written in one of my old school books). I never did make it to "vet school", however, my passion for animals remains the same. I especially love "critters", animals that make many people a little (or a lot!) squeamish. I adore mice, rats, chinchillas, hedgehogs...and chameleons. In fact, the first real chameleon I ever saw was at one of my favourite zoos - Little Ray's Reptile Zoo here in Ottawa, Canada. It was at Little Ray's where I got to see a chameleon out of its cage and being hand fed. I found it fascinating to watch. Let me tell you, their tongues move at lightning speed!

If you have ever been to Little Ray's Reptile Zoo, you'll know that one of their regular features is their feeding shows. These feeding shows allow the audience to sit up close and personal with various creatures, learn a bit about them, and watch them being fed. I've seen Little Ray's staff feed snakes, turtles, chameleons... and even alligators! To enhance the "animal experience", Little Ray's even encourages the audience members to touch (and sometimes hold!) the animals. This is where I (the arachnophobe ) got my first chance to hold a tarantula. This is one thing I thought I would NEVER do. You can read more about Little Ray's Reptile Zoo in my previous blog about them here.

Little Ray's coloured logo

Did you know that Little Ray's Reptile Zoo offers some fantastic programs and shows outside and away from their zoo?

One of these programs is their Little Ray's Zoo Camp.

In 2013, Little Ray's Zoo Camps are set to become their best camps ever. Kids attending the interactive camps will get a chance to learn about the care and maintenance of the animals, and so much more.

They will even get to learn about the plants and animals that live in the forests around Ottawa. For those of you living in the Ottawa area, but living far from the Little Ray's Reptile Zoo location, they have added a second camp in conjunction with Dovercourt Rec Centre and the Midway - centrally located in Westboro.

By the way, for those of you living in the Hamilton, Ontario region, you are in luck! Little Ray's Reptile Zoo has just opened it's newest zoo on June 8th in Hamilton. Be sure to visit them! They have an opening month special - $9.50 per person from June 8-July 15th.

What young child wouldn't love to spend a week learning all about great creatures and having the chance to interact with them? This camp sounds pretty fantastic to me! I wonder if Little Ray's would allow this "big kid" to sneak into the camp.

All-Natural @LitterGetter Keeps Odours Away {#Giveaway} US/CAN, 5/30

Litter Getter Logo and Product
Aries The Cat turned 17-years old last month. That's around 3,789,324 human years.

While she hasn't had issues with not using her litter box, since we moved it, we now notice the smell.

When I heard about this product that states it helps keep your house odour-free and litter train cats, I wanted to tell you about it.

Litter Getter "The All Natural Litter Training Solution".

What is Litter Getter? Litter Getter is an all-natural mixture of herbs and plant extracts designed to bring problem cats back to the litter box and assist in training kittens.

It keeps the house smelling better by neutralizing ammonia-related odor by the inclusion of a yaccu extract. It also clumps with the cat litter making cleanup easier and is not harmful to people or pets.

The product looks and smells exactly as it should... a natural mixture of herbs. A pleasant tinge of sweetness was also present. I started with a fresh and full box of clumping litter and mixed in the recommended 1/4 bottle dose of Litter Getter (1/8 of the bottle for maintenance).

Four days later, and it still didn't smell bad. Yes, I put my head in her litter box. No, I didn't clean it for four days.

This fresh smell is exactly what we were going for as her litter box is in a high traffic area (the bathroom). It also appears to have kept down some of the dust that used to be floating around. Seeing as Ed has a lot of allergies, this is a great added benefit.

Just as I was putting her litter box in it's place, she started to use it so I had to run for my camera. Then I ran out of battery power stopped it to protect her modesty.

As you can see, she didn't hesitate or have any problems with using her new environment. That's great considering cats can sometimes be resistant to change.

Based on the recommended dosage, the bottle should last several months. Even longer if I clean it out regularly like I normally do.

Connect with Litter Getter via Website and Twitter.

I love Little Ray's Reptile Zoo. I have visited their Ottawa location four times in the last year or so. My boyfriend introduced me to Little Ray's Reptile Zoo for the first time when we took his son there to see all the critters and creatures. I always have a great time checking out the animals at the zoo.

Winky One-eyed African Bull Frog During our most recent visit in March, we got to see alligators and "Winky" the one-eyed African Bull Frog being fed. We even got to check out a pair of Lynx and a pair of Bald Eagles that had recently been taken in by the zoo.

That's something I love about Little Ray's Reptile Zoo ~ you just never know what you are going to see during your next visit to the zoo!

My most memorable visit to Little Ray's Reptile Zoo? That was the time that I actually held a tarantula (EEK!) in my hand. As someone who is terrified of spiders, I was proud of myself for facing one of my biggest fears. You know what? I have to say...that tarantula was kind of...GULP...cute!

Canadians: Show @Iams and The World How Much you Love your Pet! {#Contest}

Iams Logo No secret about it, The Zoo loves animals.

Reina, Phoenix and Aries the Cat have been a part of our family since the beginning and they aren't the only furry ones.

Every year, while in Mexico, we always gain a few more and if everything goes according to plan, we find loving homes for them.

Even though they're only with me for a short time and I know going in that The Zoo will not be their "forever home", they still have a huge impact on my life and in my heart.

I Love Them All Unconditionally.

Iams shares this loving feeling with all they do for our furry friends. One example is their Highly successful and Worldwide, Home 4 The Holidays Adoption campaign. They understand that not only are pets our companions, they are members of the family.

To celebrate the unconditional love between pets and their owners, Iams is launching its Love Tail Contest and calling on all Canadians to submit their everlasting love story with a photo that captures the strong, loving bond between Parents and their Pets.

Aries The Cat at Journeys of The Zoo Winning submissions will have their love stories turned into "Love Tails"; short memorable videos that will run on the Iams social channels and will win one year's supply of Iams food!

Your Dog Deserves @Iams Shakeables Treats #giveaway, CAN, 3/8

Iams Logo Reina and Phoenix are Iams dogs. They also carry the torch of being rescue dogs that had a tough life before becoming members of Journeys of The Zoo.

They were lucky to have food and water let alone treats. That's why I like to spoil them.

With wholesome ingredients, delicious flavours and real meat, Iams Shakeables Soft & Chewy treats is the perfect way to be conscious of their health and,

Portrait of Reina Portrait of Phoenix

Show your dog that you love them!

Seeing as Phoenix has colitis, we have to be really careful what we feed him. When I have treats, Reina usually gets most of them. As luck would have it, he can eat real lamb. I can't wait for him to try this recently launched product when we get home.

Here are some things that you should remember when feeding your dog.

Stay Away From Table Scraps. As much as your furry friend loves to hang around the table while you're eating, ready to pounce on anything that may fall to floor, resist the urge to feed table scrapes. Not only is human food potentially toxic to animals, scraps also tend to be high in fat and calories and low in the vitamins and nutrients your pet needs. Treats, like New Iams Shakeables, offer wholesome ingredients full of delicious flavours your pet will love.

Tricks For Treats. Treats can be used for training to get your pet's attention and keep him or her focused. While training, you should use soft, chewy treats that are easy to digest and won't take away from training time.

Timing is Everything. While training your pet, make sure you are rewarding him or her with a treat immediately after performing the correct action. This ensures the reward is associated with the behaviour.

Consistency is Key. Dog training is intense, so choose a day you have a good amount of free time to begin. Pretend you have left the house and stay away for several minutes. Once your dog thinks you're gone and "violates the restricted area," walk in and give a firm "no" or "get down." Direct your dog to his or her bed, and praise him or her for going to it. Repeat this as many times as necessary. Eventually, most dogs will get the hint. Again, consistency is key. This training may have to be repeated periodically over several weeks or even months.

Take Treats With You. Most pets don't stop exhibiting good behaviour after they leave the front door. Whether you're going on a trip, taking a walk, or playing in the park with your pet, treats make great pet travel rewards.

Give Treats In Between Meals. Remember, treats are not a substitute for a meal and should not make up more than 10 to 20 per cent of a dog's daily diet. To avoid filling up your pet before a meal, try giving treats in between your pet's scheduled meal times. If you're training with treats, cut back on meal portions after a session to avoid overeating.

Visit New Iams Shakeables, for more information on adult and puppy training tips.

Win all three flavours of Iams Shakeables Treats!

How you Can Help Raise Money for The Mexican Dogs.

animal humane society logo
Since 2005, we have been members of an animal humane society called "Tzi'te Animal Proteccion" in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico.

This past year, I've blogged about our issues with animal overpopulation and our plan to conquer it.

The last missing piece of the puzzle...

Funding.

While vet consulting fees, sterilization and general care does cost less in Mexico (relative to North America), it is still exceptionally high in comparison to the cost of living.

Until we joined the group, all the funding had come out of individual members pockets. If you found a dog and rehabilitated it, it was yours. At one time, we had five dogs in various stages of care.

Saving one dog or five wasn't a financial burden for us. The problem was saving one dog every.single.day.

The current system was not sustainable.

We came up with a plan that was a win-win-win.

@Iams #Home4TheHolidays Pet Adoption Drive: How to Help.

Five out of eight members of Journeys of The Zoo are adopted.

While my story has a happy beginning, Reina was found starved (almost) to death and Phoenix had his throat cut. Fighters need to win...

That's why I'm honoured to be a part of Iams Family of Bloggers promoting awareness of the Home 4 The Holidays initiative.

Iams Home 4 The Holidays Logo

Did you know that this is Iams 14th year focussing on raising awareness of pet adoption and ensuring proper nutrition for more homeless pets? This year, they will once again work in conjunction with founding partner Helen Woodward Animal Center, the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies and more than 4,000 animal organizations Worldwide to encourage pet adoption.

As part of this initiative, seven million pets have been adopted Worldwide with over 1.2 milllion during last years holiday campaign. The program which runs from Oct. 1, 2012 through Jan. 2, 2013 has already donated 486,734 meals to rescues and shelters. Their goal... 5 million meals! Iams is putting their money where their mouth is and,

Now it's your turn!

The Plan: Conquering Dog Overpopulation in Chiapas, Mexico

As I mentioned in my previous post, cultural and financial issues were inhibiting "our" ability to deal with the overpopulation of dogs in Chiapas, Mexico.

Let me start out by explaining who I'm talking about when I say "our".

Through a network of "friends of friends" a group of ten managed to find each other. Interestingly, there were only four foreigners in the bunch. We had all been trying to make a dent in the problem using our own limited resources. We found strength in numbers.

We got organized; appointed a president, created a mission statement (Education, Sterilization, Euthanization and Rescue -- in that order), met with the Mayor (this alone took several months) and received permission to set up a table in the zocalo for the purposes of educating the populace and selling some of our wares donated by local artisans.

One of the members got in touch with a friend in the USA and they in turn got in touch with a big American firm that provides *free sterilization clinics.

ed Assisting with Phoenix's Neutering
Ed is assisting with the neuter of Phoenix.

*They pay for the plane ticket and the vets wages. We were responsible for all other costs. The only additional fee was the cost of medication which turned out to be $7/animal. Considering local vets charge $150-200USD per sterilization, this was a deal! I would tell you the name of the "American firm" if I hadn't forgotten the name wasn't sworn to secrecy.

We coordinated over 50 volunteers, sponsors for food, accommodations, evening activities, transportation, facility rental, the list goes on. It was a big, well thought out and organized affair. Eight months in the making.

Bruce the Vet, a Canadian (small world) arrived in tow with a representative from "Humane Society International" in Washington, D.C, two vets from Monterrey (a two-day drive away) and some local vets.

The local vets came because Bruce offered to educate them in the quick, easy and less invasive (and in turn, less expensive) methods of sterilization.

It was a win-win-win.

We were ready to change the world.

You know the adage, "If you build it, they will come"? Translated into Spanish it reads, I'd love something for free as long as you're willing to do all the work and you...

CAN'T neuter my Male!

Yes, the culture is that macho. We could have all the females we wanted but we had to catch them and then care for them (for one week afterwards). At which time, we could return them to the streets their owners.

Our dedication to the cause remained unfaltered. We rounded up the poor souls and worked into the night.

Ed was fortunate enough to assist with Reina's sterilization surgery and I was there for her recovery. A unique opportunity that is not available in Canada.

Tzite Sterilization Clinic Chiapas Mexico
I'm in the top left hand corner wearing pink. Perfect colour for the bleed and defecate everywhere recovery room.

When all was said and done, 134 dogs and cats were spayed and neutered over three days. Someone did the math and apparently, over 5 years, that one clinic alone prevented 144,000 new animals from being born. That's a lot of mutts.

The Mayor happened to be holding a recognition ceremony that week so we were all on hand to receive our certificates for "Bettering the City".

Tzite Award Ceremony Chiapas Mexico
You can see Phoenix and I kneeling in the front of the top picture.

The clinic was a great start but if we wanted to have a long-term impact on overpopulation, we had to come up with sustainable and local ways to make a difference.

On to the next challenge... Money.

The Issue: Tzi'te Humane Society, Chiapas, Mexico

The Zoo is a founding member of the "Tzi'te Proteccion Animal" humane society of San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico.
Animal Humane Society Logo Chiapas Mexico
This picture of ancient Mayan dogs is our logo.

The story begins when we first set eyes on San Cristobal de las Casas.

The mountains take your breath away (literally and figuratively the city is located at 2,200m=7,200ft). The hillsides are dotted with shanties and untouched lushness. The rainwater (from far off places) runs the shortest distance downhill inevitably crossing the paths of indigenous women who want to bathe and wash their clothes. The temperate climate is beautiful all year and the city has all the amenities with a population of 120,000 inhabitants.

It was love at first sight. San Cristobal de Las Casas Chiapas Mexico

What wasn't was seeing the emaciated, ravaged, dying, dead, timid beasts with Mange, Distemper and other contagious (and preventable) diseases. On every block around every corner, there they were. They had taken over the streets.

Hard to read about huh!? Imagine having to experience it every.single.day.

The general population was terrified to death; not so much by the dogs but as to where their next meal was coming. You can hardly blame them for not worrying about the dogs. Besides, the culture is such that you let your dog out into the street in the morning and if they come home at night, it's all good. If not, it's time to get another dog.

Canine overpopulation is a serious issue. People believe that breeding is the next "get rich" scheme. The problem is that no one has any cash and everyone has 3,497 dogs to sell. Sterilization isn't cost effective as it's equal to a 1/2 months wages. Only the fools and the rich pay for dogs. Everyone else just gets one from a friend or steals one off the street. The cost, Free. Seeing as they pay nothing, they value it as such.

It's only been within the past few years that the culture has shifted slightly to encourage people to give and/or purchase food for their dogs. In addition, the current Mayor has been coming down hard on street dogs and unleashing his Dog Catcher on them. Any dog without an owner and not leashed is fair game. Note that all street dogs technically have owners. The few that don't, don't last very long...

Dog with Distemper
I found 8-week old Juan in the gutter, he had Distemper and had to be put down.

The good news is that if your dog doesn't come home, you have a pretty good idea where it is. Bad news is that it will cost you more than the dog is worth to get it back (the pound charges a $15US tequila administration fee).

The horrifying news is that life in the pound (if even for 15 minutes) is not good. Death, even worse. The term humane has nothing to do with it.

If we were going to make a difference, we had our hands full.

Next up, "The Plan".

Note 1: The name "Tzi'te" comes from the language Tzotil (one of eight languages spoken in Chiapas) and literally translated means "House of" (Tzi) the "Dog" (te).

Note 2: I use the term "humane society" to imply a sense of action and not because we are associated with them.

Besos, The Zoo
