Melissa Avey Photography is giving away a $100 gift card that may be used between September 2013 and September 2014. Please note that your session will take place on location in Cambridge, Ontario or the City of Toronto Only. Feel free to use the gift card towards any offered service.

BK Inspired Wooden Coasters

3. Maya from BK Inspired.

Maya is a Work-at-Home Mom to two young boys and Mountie husband who live in a small town east of Toronto and situated on Lake Ontario. She has many creative interests but pyrography (wood burning) is her favourite.

She loves to see a design take shape as the tool moves over a piece of wood. She draws inspiration from everything around her; her kids, nature and especially other artists and pyrographers. She is constantly honing her skills and developing her own style.

Maya is giving away a set of four hand pyrographed coasters valued at $35. As well from now until July 11, she is offering 10% off any purchase in her shop with code: zoo2013.

Yumme Designs Logo

4. Basia from Yumme Designs.

The name of my company, Yumme (pronounced yummy), is named after a very special part of my life... my Kids, Ewan and Emma.

My goal is to create each piece individually so that it will become meaningful to the new owner.

My first inspiration for starting this business was not being able to find a suitable head piece for my wedding so I ended up making one for myself from a silver necklace.

Because of my eastern European background, I use a lot of Baltic Amber in my work. It has been around for millions of years and has been used for thousands for its healing properties, not only for adults but also for children.

Basia is giving away a $20 Gift Certificate to her Etsy Shop. Have fun choosing from all the jewellery items for adults and kids.

This is Sew Me Organic Diaper

5. Heather from This is Sew Me Organic.

Heather has been sewing, designing, knitting, and crocheting for eight years now. Along with her husband Sebastian, they created the inspiration behind their diaper line, their son Atticus. As Christians, they thank God for all the talent he has given them.

Their line of diapers are completely natural and organic. The fabrics have been carefully chosen with much consideration to make them lasting and extremely comfortable for your baby to be in.

Heather is giving away an "All in 2 Diaper" valued at $30.

FlipSize Canada Logo

Thursday BlogLovin Hop at Journeys of The Zoo

This week was a bit of a challenge as I'm having problems with my keyboard.

I can't seem to find the letter "w", no "p", there it is, the "t".

And there was that little declaration from Max that he was toilet training himself.

Needless to say, I'm happy that it's finally Friday.

Well, not really but close enough. However, it is Thursday and that means it's time for...

All the Things that I Swore I Would Do as a Parent.

Baby Bottle and Soother Before I became a Mother, I had a long list of things that I swore I would never do when I became a Parent.

You know, no soothers, no night time bottles, no noisy toys, no television.

I thought about writing a post about it but you've heard it all before.

Besides, I've done everything I swore I wouldn't.
Photo taken by SQUAIO

So, I thought that I would put a new spin on an old classic and write about "All the Things that I Swore I Would Do as a Parent".

And so ends this post.

Seriously though, I never really thought about it. I was so focused on all the things I wanted to avoid that I didn't focus on the positives.

If I had made a list, I would have put the following on it...

How to Not Cook a Fried Egg {Humor}

One thing I learned early on with this whole blogging thing is to write about what you know.

Another thing I learned is that following the rules all the time, can be boring and let's be real, tilting at windmills is my specialty.

That's why, when my good friend, Shayna over at Mommy Outside suggested that we do a Guest Post Swap on eggs, I was all in! Before, you check out her appetizing recipe post for Spinach, Egg and Feta Pockets, see what I have to say about...

WIN a Week of Summer Camp at Little Ray's Reptile Zoo, #Ottawa, 6/25

Little Ray's Zoo Logo
Does this guy look familiar?

What about his crocodile (or is that an alligator)?

If not, you must have missed our giveaway in April for a Family Pack of tickets to Little Ray's Reptile Zoo.

If you did miss it, no worries because this time, you can win a...

Week for one child at Little Ray's Zoo Camp in Ottawa!

Journeys of The Zoo has been fortunate enough to participate in this giveaway with your HOST Canadian Blog and Co-hosts Ottawa Mommy Club ~ Shannon's View from Here ~ Tales of Mommyhood AND ~ Coffee with Julie.

Note that The Zoo has never been to Little Ray's so we'll let Sandi (from Canadian Blog House) let you know what it's all about.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

I love animals. As a child, I wanted to be a veterinarian when I grew up (this is written in one of my old school books). I never did make it to "vet school", however, my passion for animals remains the same. I especially love "critters", animals that make many people a little (or a lot!) squeamish. I adore mice, rats, chinchillas, hedgehogs...and chameleons. In fact, the first real chameleon I ever saw was at one of my favourite zoos - Little Ray's Reptile Zoo here in Ottawa, Canada. It was at Little Ray's where I got to see a chameleon out of its cage and being hand fed. I found it fascinating to watch. Let me tell you, their tongues move at lightning speed!

If you have ever been to Little Ray's Reptile Zoo, you'll know that one of their regular features is their feeding shows. These feeding shows allow the audience to sit up close and personal with various creatures, learn a bit about them, and watch them being fed. I've seen Little Ray's staff feed snakes, turtles, chameleons... and even alligators! To enhance the "animal experience", Little Ray's even encourages the audience members to touch (and sometimes hold!) the animals. This is where I (the arachnophobe ) got my first chance to hold a tarantula. This is one thing I thought I would NEVER do. You can read more about Little Ray's Reptile Zoo in my previous blog about them here.

Little Ray's coloured logo

Did you know that Little Ray's Reptile Zoo offers some fantastic programs and shows outside and away from their zoo?

One of these programs is their Little Ray's Zoo Camp.

In 2013, Little Ray's Zoo Camps are set to become their best camps ever. Kids attending the interactive camps will get a chance to learn about the care and maintenance of the animals, and so much more.

They will even get to learn about the plants and animals that live in the forests around Ottawa. For those of you living in the Ottawa area, but living far from the Little Ray's Reptile Zoo location, they have added a second camp in conjunction with Dovercourt Rec Centre and the Midway - centrally located in Westboro.

By the way, for those of you living in the Hamilton, Ontario region, you are in luck! Little Ray's Reptile Zoo has just opened it's newest zoo on June 8th in Hamilton. Be sure to visit them! They have an opening month special - $9.50 per person from June 8-July 15th.

What young child wouldn't love to spend a week learning all about great creatures and having the chance to interact with them? This camp sounds pretty fantastic to me! I wonder if Little Ray's would allow this "big kid" to sneak into the camp.

Connect with Little Ray via their Website, Facebook and Twitter.

Local Dandelion Festival is a Hit with The Kids {Event}

Dandelion Festival Logo For the past three years, The Zoo has attended The Dandelion Festival. Held on the last weekend in May, it's North Grenville's premiere festival showcasing our rich artistic and musical talent.

A favourite with our family is always the Farmers Market, Big Sky Ranch (a local animal shelter), Volunteer Fire Department, storytelling at the library and buskers in the streets.

This year, the weather was cool and overcast but it didn't dampen our spirits!

Spring Clean your Vehicle with Tips from Insurance Hunter

This post brought to you by Insurance Hunter. All opinions are 100% mine.

Insurance Hunter Spring Cleaning Tips1
The Zoo returned home from our 5,000km road trip eight weeks ago.

However, from the look of our van, you'd think that it had been two years ago.

Yes, that bad.

When I came across this valuable vehicle spring cleaning article from Insurance Hunter, I thought that I'd see how our van stacked up.

Here are a few of the items that Insurance Hunter recommends we complete each Spring.

Spring Maintenance. Ed's responsible for the car maintenance. Immediately upon our return and before every road trip, he checks all the fluid levels, changes the oil and checks the tires. He passed with flying colours.

I am responsible for the inside of the van. I failed, miserably.

Remove the winter floor mats and Clean the interior. The winter mats are still in the car. Not that you can really tell because they're now hidden under all the road salt, dirt and animal hair that has accumulated over the past six months.

Not great for a family with allergies.

Get rid of the lingering things in your trunk. Unnecessary items and toys are everywhere. Not just in the trunk but in the cabin too. A friend who is a car seat technician mentioned that any unsecured items, no matter how small can be deadly in the case of an accident.

Things definitely need to be cleaned up.

Replace your winter kit for a summer survival kit. As for the survival kit, besides having extra drinking water in the car and some blankets, we don't have a survival kit. With all the travelling we do, we should. Since reading Insurance Hunter’s blog post, I've already packed a bag to leave in the car with a spare set of clothes for the kids, diapers, sunscreen and sunglasses. These last two items are so important because they have blue eyes and fair skin which makes them really susceptible to the suns rays.

Whether you're planning a road trip or not this summer, situations can arise even on the way to the grocery store and it's easy to be prepared. I encourage your to read Insurance Hunters blog post for yourself and tell me if your car is ready for Spring.

While you're there, get your no obligation and FREE auto insurance quotes. It only takes three minutes and could save you lots of money.

The Zoo Be Roadtrip Ready.

Give your Family the Sleep it Needs with Gro Clock [Review]

GroClock
Now that The Kids are toilet training, they're getting up earlier to go to the bathroom and they're not going back to sleep afterwards.

Coupled with the fact that they're not napping, I'm missing that extra sleep and so are they.

I'm tired of being tired.

When a friend mentioned there was a product that could help, I was excited to learn more.

Gro Clock to the Rescue!

The Gro Company are the creators of this fabulous product and in Canada, it's distributed by Oyaco. A bit about this Canadian company with a diverse range of products.

Oyaco is a Canadian distributor of innovative, safe and high quality baby, maternity and children's products. OYACO is based in Calgary, Alberta and ships its 30 product lines to over 600 retail and online stores across the country.

Oyaco Black Logo We take a great deal of pride in the brands we represent. Sourced from countries around the world, the brands ultimately found in our portfolio have been carefully selected, tested and evaluated by a panel of peers and moms. All our products meet safety standards and governmental regulations.

Before I even saw the product, I was impressed. All the information on the outside of the box was clearly printed in English, French and Spanish! That's the first time that I can remember seeing a kids product with all three languages.

When I saw the long and practical list of functionality, I just knew that my mornings of sleeping in were going to come true. Here are some of the key features;

Gro Clock Contents

  • Key-lock option
  • adjustable screen brightness
  • silent operation
  • energy saving daytime mode
  • Includes educational bedtime story book
  • optional digital clock and audible alarm feature
  • additional daytime/weekend sleep mode
  • can be set for periods of more than twelve hours
  • Glowing screen shows images of stars and the sun to communicate "sleep" and "wake-up" time to children
  • Stars go out one-by-one during the night to show the passing of time

Three Clock Stages

The first night, we incorporated the bedtime book that accompanies the clock into our bedtime routine. The book helped the kids understand the concept and they really enjoyed being involved in picking the spot for the clock. I liked that the cord was 75" long, because I had so many choices of where to put it. I put it up high and tied off the cord so that it's not a chocking hazard.

The instructions were very detailed and I had to refer to them a few times. At the beginning, I couldn't figure out how to return back to the main menu so I just unplugged it. Luckily, it doesn't reset the clock or alarm times unless left unplugged for over three minutes. Convenient if you have to move it from one spot to another.

Funny thing, Max, herein referred to as the "Clock Setter" figured things out with only a few presses and no instructions. Hmmph.

The kids usually get up at 7am but play in their room until 8am. At which time, I get up for the day. Lately, it's as if the kids knew that this clock was on it's way because they've been getting up at 6:30am.

The clock was set for 8am. Here's what happened...

You'll need to turn it up because I was whispering the whole time!?

Now that we're on Day 4 of using the clock, The Kids get it! They're waiting for "The sun to come up" and then knocking on the door. They proudly tell me that the sun is awake and it's time to get up.

While the kids are still learning to recognize their numbers, I love that this product can grow with them as the digital clock can be displayed or not.

The one thing that I would have changed about this product is that it doesn't run on battery back-up. We live out in the country and have fairly frequent power outages as well, go camping every summer so it would have been convenient to use the clock in our daily routine.

Connect with Oyaco to find out about more great Gro Products and via their Website, Facebook and Twitter.

Let your Friends Get More Sleep with Gro Clock.

Note that a giveaway for a Gro Clock was previously associated with this post. Jennifer S. was the confirmed winner.

Second Peek Maternity Boutique Has Moms Covered {#Giveaway} US/CAN, 6/25

Second Peek Maternity Boutique Logo Breastfeeding is hard.

Between a need for modesty, continued discomfort, and "baby brain", there are a lot of things that can go wrong.

One thing that was easy was finding useful and quality products at Second Peek Maternity Boutique.

Breastfeeding can be a Positive Experience
for Baby and Mom.

Fortunately for me, I've had the opportunity to review their products and service before and had great things to say about their Undercover Mama Nursing Tank. Which incidently, I'm using for Baby #2! Here's a bit more about the company.

Founded in late 2009, Second Peek Maternity started as an online maternity resale shop dedicated to pre-loved maternity wear. Today it has grown to be a major retail online resource for new and expecting moms in Canada. We proudly support mom-owned businesses, featuring their products on our website. Many of these mommy products are award winning, and all were carefully chosen and aimed towards the lifestyle and needs of busy moms. Our goal is to help simplify the everyday tasks.

The first item that I reviewed was the Milk Bands Nursing Bracelet. The durable, wearable bracelet is available in five different colours. I chose green because I am a big supporter of organ donation and thought why not support my cause at the same time.

Milk Bands Nursing Bracelet from Second Peek
The mechanism on the bracelet is simple: when ready to nurse, flip the pliable bracelet over to see which side to feed from first. My favourite feature of this bracelet is that the font for "Right" is raised and the font for "Left" is depressed, which helps a lot in the dark at 2am! There are also removable sliding time indicators which can be used as reminders for anything that mom might forget. I'm currently managing my daughter's slow weight gain and am using the indicators to record the number of feedings per day.

At a regular price of $6.85, this is a great item to add to any gift for an expectant mom.

Nursing? Second Peek Maternity has you Covered!

The second item that I received was a MoBoleez Nursing Bonnet. With summer fast approaching, I'll be at the park a lot with my toddler and was hoping for something that provided modesty, sun-cover for my infant, wasn't too hot, while being stylish at the same time. I've never had luck trying to wrangle a blanket over my shoulder.

I was concerned initially that the bonnet would be too bulky to pack in my overflowing diaper bag, but was pleased to find it folded to no larger than a regular receiving blanket. I did make the mistake of ordering the 6-12m size instead of the 0-6m size, so it is a bit big on my 3-month old, but she'll grow into it which is OK by me.

I like that Second Peek provides options that would be considered suitable for boys too, although the bonnet provides such great cover nobody would be the wiser. I think that the Moboleez bonnet is a great alternative to other nursing covers available and have not seen anything else like it!

Second Peek Maternity Boutique is soon launching a sister website called The Mommy Collection. This site will house all the great mom-invented products currently available in the boutique. Be sure to book mark it.

Discount Alert! All Journeys of The Zoo's readers will enjoy a 10% discount off their purchase (until further notice). Use the discount code 'THEZOO' at time of checkout.
