Me and My MuuMuu at 24 Weeks with Triplets

Here at Journeys of The Zoo, we've been spending all our spare time getting ready for our annual summer trip to the Family Farm Compound (North of Toronto). Don't worry, it will be business around here as usual with hilarity in bounds.

Seeing as Ed is in Rochester on business, Nanna has been here to help by looking after the kids while I pack. It didn't help matters that her altinator seized on Monday (while taking it into the shop for a little noise it was making, it broke down before we got there). Hello CAA.

Did I mention that we spent the weekend in New York State visiting friends that Ed met online (on a woodworking forum)? The last time we saw them, I was pregnant with the litter.

To make a long story short, I haven't had any time to take (m)any pictures for Wordless Wednesday.

24 Weeks Pregnant with Triplets

Hello MuuMuu!

So, I thought that I'd go "into the archives" and show you the only body picture of me taken at 24 weeks gestation in October 2009 (on Nanna's cell phone). Note that I went on to carry the kids for another 6 weeks (I was huge). Shortly after this picture was taken, I exchanged the MuuMuu for a hospital gown. It was either that or bed sheets...

Leave the link to your Wordless Wednesday!

Pampers Is More Than Diapers {Giveaway} #babyshower, CAN, 8/23

Pampers Official Logo
I was talking to a friend the other day about how Pampers has been with Journeys of The Zoo since the very beginning. And that was a really early start, try 30 weeks, 3 days gestation (yes, the 3 days count!).

For the first eight weeks of their life, the kids were cared for in the NICU and were treated exclusively to Pampers diapers and wipes. When they came home, I wanted to stick with a tried, tested and trusted product.

Pampers Worked for Us!

Pampers story doesn't end there. They are much more than diapers and wipes. They have a great rewards program of which I am a member (every little bit helps), they have a forum where families can connect and share stories and they're supporting our Olympic Athletes by getting people just like you to create an anthem just for them!

Join in on the Fun!

When Journeys of The Zoo had the opportunity to share our Pampers success story and throw in a giveaway, we jumped at the chance. You too can benefit from Pamper's generosity as they are giving away a $100 Pampers Prize Pack (diapers and wipes)! Enter below for your chance to win.

Recipient of the Liebster Award = I Am Nice.

By some strange twist of insanity fate, Bonnie over at The Koala Bear Writer has awarded Journeys of The Zoo with the "Liebster Award". In her own words she said that she likes blogs that...

"infuse a dash of humour into their writing".

I'm pretty sure that Bonnie got her blogs mixed up because if she was talking about Journeys of The Zoo she would have written "humongously enormous" amount of humour.

In case you're not familiar with the award, Liebster is a German word meaning sweetest, kindest, nicest, dearest, beloved, lovely, pleasant, valued, cute, endearing and welcome.

And we all know that..

Liebster Blog Award Logo

I am Nice.

Thanks for recognizing that Bonnie.

And the rules are (I hate rules):

  • Thank and link back to the person who presented you with the award. Add the award logo to your blog.
  • Answer the eleven questions posted for the nominees.
  • Share eleven random facts about yourself.
  • Write eleven questions for your nominees and then…

  11. What was the happiest day of your life (besides Marriage or Childbirth)? Sometime during my 28th year I had an epiphany. It's been all uphill since then.

Canadian? Blogger? Disney? Check out this Great Opportunity!

Disney Baby Logo

Journeys of The Zoo is excited to get the opportunity to review Disney's *NEW* Cuddly BodySuit and you can too!

Disney Baby has just released this adorable "you-need-it-in-your-closet" item into the Canadian Market and they are dedicated to helping parents enjoy every little magical moment with their baby. So, when the Disney "Momgineers" discovered that babies go through more than 35 bodysuits in their first year (totally believable!), they listened and created a perfect mom-inspired bodysuit. The extra stitching on all seams provides the Disney Cuddly Bodysuit with added strength to withstand repeated washes. This cuddly bodysuit is not only great for the babies, but for the moms too.

The Disney Cuddly Bodysuit is made from 100 per cent huggable soft cotton so moms can welcome their little one with a cuddle. It is also the first infant bodysuit to feature a patented grow-with-me design, with two rows of snaps to ensure extended use as baby grows. The label free design helps protect baby's delicate skin and the envelope neck makes it easy to go over baby's head.

If you have a Canadian Blog, would like to work with a great company like Disney and want your kid to be styling with the latest fashions...

This is the Opportunity for You!

Send me an email with your desired size (outfits go up to nine months) and you'll be on your way to Cuddly Greatness!

Note that Journeys of The Zoo is an excited participant of this Program. Watch for our Review of this Great Product!

The Time I Got Migraines to Avoid Ballet.

I remember it like it was yesterday.

Another event, just like all the others.

One where I'm out cash, have to dance around and wear a silly costume.

Is Ballet and Brownies some regulated form of torture Right of Passage?

Ballet Recital Raggedy Ann
Because every girl dreams of a mop like that...

To make a short story even shorter, fortunately for me, I got a migraine and never had to return to "The Ballet".

You ask my Mother and she'll tell you that

I loved Ballet.

Ya, like a migraine.

So I was trying to think about what teaser I would leave you with for next week. I mean, by now, I'm 12 years old which is half way to 24 and at the rate I'm going, that might just be next week.

I could leave you with "The time my girlfriends and I watched Risky Business for my 12th birthday". No, the 12 is not a typo. Regardless, I already ruined that surprize.

Or, I could tell you about the time that I moved schools out of my own free will and had to take a bus instead of jumping over the back fence. Which I never actually did but I could have because my house backed on to the school property. I really shouldn't be using the past tense because my Mother still lives there and my Dad grew up there. We also went to the same high school. Wow, I didn't bore tell you a lot.

But if I told you that then I'd need to tell you about the fact that I changed schools to pursue some "Gifted Curriculum" (cause I'm really smart don't you know). Then, I'd have to share about the time that my Mother made the Reviewers re-check my scores because to quote her "I sure was gifted but not in the ways they thought I was...".

But that would all be boring and seem like I was tooting my own horn and I always never do that.

So I think that I'll leave you with the *first* time that...

"I Tore my Knee Cartilage and had Surgery"

Because I'm pretty sure that with a title like that you'll be sitting on pins and needles until next week in anticipation of what exciting morsels of literary genius I will come up with.

Besides, I'm running out of stories that I remember prior to yesterday and it's high time that you knew about my life as a Championship Downhill Skier.

Get Caught up in the Series, it's Addictive!

Simplify your Life with the AVENT 3in1 Sterilizer #babyshower, CAN, 08/23

Journeys of The Zoo is excited to introduce you to today's #Babyshower Sponsor AVENT who is giving away a 3 in 1 Sterilizer valued at $99!

ADVENT 3 in 1 Baby Sterilizer

Philips AVENT is a leader in parenting and baby products. The Philips AVENT product range includes breastfeeding, bottle feeding, toddler feeding, baby monitors and newborn gifts. Their website states that:

The new AVENT SCF284/05 Electric Steam Sterilizer has been designed to make sterilizing as simple as possible. With adjustable size, it takes up less kitchen space and the baskets fit both wide and narrow neck bottles.

Some other advantages are that it has a six minute cycle with automatic shut-off (we all get busy!) and Natural steam sterilization kills 99.9% of harmful germs (great piece of mind). To top it off, this sterilizer is BPA Free. A BIG plus in my books.

Watch this cute YouTube Video to see for yourself.

For whatever reason, when the kids were young, I didn't have an electric sterilizer and I assure you, my life was anything but "simple". Twice a day I was sweating over a hot stove boiling (and burning) bottle parts like it was going out of style. Because, I had plenty of time for that.

I did have their manual breast pump as a back-up and for the handful of times that I needed it, it was a lifesaver... literally.

Whether you decide to breastfeed or bottle feed, sometimes things don't go according to plan. I really wish that I'd had one of these sterilizers in my collection. If I had to do it all over again (please no, smile), I would definitely be putting this on my wish list.

We all want to do what's best for our family and our kids.

Adding Advent products to your life is a great start!

Prize: One lucky Canadian will win an Avent Sterilizer valued at $99.

Are you a Blog Sabatoge Enabler? {Awareness}

Ever get that sinking feeling that something just isn't right, that someone is sabatoging you?

I have that feeling.

I won't go into specifics because as they say in Hollywood, "All Publicity is Good Publicity" (although I think a few people should rethink that concept).

What I will share is that another blog who is way bigger than me (in their minds anyways) doesn't like me. Whether I did anything to justify this or not it doesn't matter.

When you get down to it, the Pied Piper isn't the problem, it's all those pesky mice. What did I ever do to them?

Last Time I Checked, Wednesday was not Tuesday!?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but today is Tuesday.
Maximilian and Artemis holding Letters

Not Wednesday.

You wouldn't know it with all the "Wordless Wednesday" linkies and posts. Not that I have a problem with that...

In case you didn't notice, the only thing that's similar about Tuesday and Wednesday is that they both end in "esday".

That's kind of like saying "I" and "Me" are similar when they don't even share one letter!

I mean, Tuesday's are reserved for playgroup and showers. They go hand in hand. Without playgroup no (need) to shower. Although, today was the exception.

See what happens when you make me think it's Wednesday. I went and missed my weekly shower (although I did go to playgroup).

We're already walking a tightrope here at The Zoo (perhaps we should call ourselves The Circus) and the last thing I need is for people going around and changing days on me.

Did I just say that today was Tuesday? Silly me, it's actually Friday.

How do I know? Well because we're going to "Finnerty's Auction" tonight and he always has it on Friday.

Besides, if it was Wednesday then I'd be posting this picture of Artemis bathing with the caption "Bath Time at The Zoo" because it's Tuesday people.

Completely Useless Drivel You Might Just Digg.

I always have tons of ideas swirling around in my head but not normally enough to write an entire post (I know, hard to believe).
Weekly Drivel in Magnets
D  R  I  V  E  L

Not wanting to deprive you, my loyal followers from all the drivel brilliance that is inside my 6x8" head I've come up with a plan.

Yes, I really measured my head.

If it sounds big or small it's because I had to measure it with a flat ruler. You know, the ones from Grade One. Which is probably when this one is from except "Grade One in 1912" because Nanna is Spring Cleaning (in July) and I'm getting all the junk keepsakes from her Mother and her Mother's Mother. Can you say crusty unfinished gimp bracelets from Camp, baby teeth, garter belts... I'll just stop there because I definitely have enough content about that. Lucky you.

Anyways, I couldn't use a measuring tape because someone borrowed it...

Old Wooden Ruler
Circa 1912.

Where was I?

The plan is to compile a list of worthy (but mostly non-worthy) thoughts and finds.

Grab your beverage of choice and get a peek into how I waste spend my time.

  1. The least likely person in my life to be influenced by my drivel called me up to tell me that he bought one of the products I'd reviewed and... It worked.
  2. Fun with Homonyms (@WriteatHome). Two Tweet is Grate!
  3. Found this post of Scott Henley's over at Dad Connection. The only thing I'd change would be to call it "10 ways to LOVE your kids".
  4. In my spare time I make up words. Must submit "drivelness" to Urban Dictionary.
  5. People are looking for activities to keep their kids out of their hair educationally entertained. Here's a few of our tried and tested ones:
    • Cook boiled eggs. Let the kids peel them. All of them. Who cares if they don't even eat them. Do you know how long it takes a two year old to peel an egg? Long enough to write this post...
    • Let a bunch of flies into the house and tell the kids to catch them.
    • Encourage the kids to dump something really messy like "the dregs at the bottom of the Shreddie Box" on the floor. Have them clean it up. Rinse and repeat.
    • Play hide and go seek. They hide, you don't seek.
  6. Know anyone that sells individual "cricut-like" handheld things?
  7. I'm writing a guest post on "All Things Multiples"? Anything you want to know in particular like "How regular were my bowel movements with three parasites inside me" or "What's it like to have a litter jump on your stomach all at the same time" (didn't Houdini die from something like that?). Please leave your fabulous questions in the comments.

See, just like I said, Completely Useless Drivel.

Note that Dictionary.com says the definition of drivel is "saliva flowing from the mouth, or mucus from the nose". Totally what I was going for.

Sew, was Eye Write or Rong? Useless or Knot?

The Zoo Family Traditions at The Knit Wit Shair

NOTE: This post was originally titled written as a Guest Post for The Knit Wit Shair.

Below is what I posted to my site and below that is the text that I Guest Posted. I am including both here in order to have a record of all The Zoo's writings.

----------------------------------------o----------------------------------------

Today, I'm excited to be guest posting over at "The Knit Wit Shair".

When Shari isn't running her successful blog or mothering her three young boys, she's probably knitting for those in need.

The Let's Cap Cancer campaign is The Knit Wit by Shair's attempt at helping to support Cancer research, while using her love of knitting to also help cancer patients going through Chemo. You can purchase a hat, spread the word, or donate supplies. Any support is greatly appreciated. Check out her current listings in her SHOP.

Shari has graciously agreed to let me take part in her "Photo a Day" meme. I hope that you will hop over and visit her site to see what I had to say about "Family Traditions".

Speaking of guest posts, over the next little while, you will have the opportunity to meet several new bloggers. The reason why I am hosting and participating in Guest Posts is to give you the opportunity to meet new people that you might not otherwise know. Be sure to watch for Shari's guest post here at The Zoo in August. I hope that you will enjoy this part of our Journey.

If you or someone you know would like to guest post at Journeys of The Zoo, please contact me at: journeysofthezoo at hotmail dot com.

Below is the content that was originally posted and has been added her to

The Zoo has their fair share of traditions. They generally fall into two categories; Family and Outdoors. There are some that fall into both.

Every summer, since the kids were six months old, we've been heading up to Algonquin Park to "camp out". No running water or electricity. Just us and the elements. This will be our third summer and I couldn't be more excited to share it with my Family.

We recently added another tradition to the list

I Cut Off All My Hair and Gave it to Barbie.

Before I tell you about the time that "I Got Migraines to Avoid Ballet", I realized that I left out the time that "I Cut Off all my Hair and gave it to Barbie".

I was around four and playing at my friend Cindy's. For whatever reason, we were in her bedroom playing with dolls and scissors, alone. Ah, the good old days.

We had several beds for the dolls but no bedding. That wouldn't suffice (yes, we actually thought exactly that). What to do?

We were stumped. There really wasn't anything to use. I mean, we couldn't cut up the doll blanket, NO! Or any of Cindy's clothing, Double NO! And we'd be in serious trouble if we so much as touched her bedding. So, we used the next best thing, hair.

I'm not sure how I got to be the sucker lucky one. It probably has something to do with my severely generous character but my Mother picked up this...

Eating my Vegetables (and Words) with Copy Kids

It all started when I received a "Copy Kids" DVD as part of my extracurricular giveaway activities. I'd been told that Mom's all around the world were raving "it really works" and "this is the greatest thing since sliced cucumber" (okay, I made that last one up).

The premise is that your child will watch short videos of different kids, at different ages (nine months to five years) eating fruits and vegetables and want to eat them.

I was thinking that I'd be really impressed if it could make me eat broccoli. Besides, the kids are really good eaters and Barney is King.

Needless to say, I was skeptical.

One day, I came home and the kids were pigging out on red peppers, cucumbers, carrots, apples, avocados, and tomatoes. And that was only their first course.

Maximilian Eating Red Peppers

Seriously, it was like watching a skit from "The Meaning of Life". Thankfully, we ran out of food before The Kids exploded.

At one point, a riot broke out because we didn't have any oranges. Thankfully, blueberries, apples, bananas and carrots (don't tell the kids they aren't a fruit) came to the rescue.

Artemis Eating Carrots

And mutiny was narrowly avoided because we didn't have any broccoli. That wasn't the real problem but rather the fact that we don't have the controller for the DVD Player (it was a hand-me down) so I couldn't figure out how to get the "broccoli" episode to play (the one that I wanted to watch the most!).

Maximilian and Artemis Watching Copy-Kids

By the end of Day Three, Nanna reminded me that I hadn't taken any pictures and without them, no one would believe me.

After four days and 18 trips to the store and garden, I'm the one left eating...

My Words.

I guess I should watch that "Potty Training" D.V.D...

I Got Kicked out of Brownies. What About You?

I'll cut to the chase, I got kicked out of Brownies.

On my first night.

Doesn't everyone?

You might say "Rogue Degenerate" but I'd like to think "Songstress in the Making".

Read on, you might be surprised (or not).

I had been begging my parents forever (probably not but when you're young, things seem like forever) to spend Thursday evenings singing and dancing.

My parents were either impressed with my maturity or it was just a coincidence that my cousin Gillian handed down her brownie outfit to me.

Either way, I was about to experience that of my wildest dreams... Brownies! Oh to be (around) seven again.

On that fateful sunny evening, I couldn't have been more prepared;

  • Faded and too large outfit: Check,
  • Scratchy, brown wool leggings: Check,
  • Scarf that was strangling me: Check,
  • Pouch with payoff quarter: Check.

Things were shaky from the beginning.

I was greeted by this person that called herself a Witch "Owl" and she wanted my quarter (and we all know what I'm willing to do for a quarter). It was pretty much a game of pull and tug.

I lost.

The torture didn't end there.

Through some twist of fate, all my friends were put into the "Little People" group and I was stuck with the "Fairies". Apparently my dismay was quite obvious as the real degenerate one of my peers gave me the secret verse that would enable me to join my friends.

Looking back now, I can't see how her idea would have had any other outcome than what it did but that's the way the cookie crumbles.

And so, when it came time to hold hands, skip around a circle and sing "our" song, I was ready. I can remember it like it was yesterday and it went like this...

"We are the Fairies glad and gay, helping people with their day."

My version...

"We are the Fairies glad and glum, helping people with their bum."

I didn't really want to be a Brownie anyway.

Don't have a Princess? No worries, Princes LOVE it too! Moey is for everyone, big and small. Here's some more great things about Moey.

Moey (a.k.a Melissa Levis) is New York City's #1 mommy rocker and an award-winning Off-Broadway songwriter. She has been referred to as "The Pied Piper in Pink" by The New York Post. She has performed for tens of thousands of children throughout New York City, Westchester, and the Hamptons in her weekly classes. She leads her band, Moey's Music Party, with songs that Time Out NY Kids has called entertaining and educational tunes reminiscent of Schoolhouse Rock, and that the New York Times has called pop music that parents can enjoy too. Nickelodeons ParentsConnect.com nominated Moeys Music Party as New York City's Best Party Entertainer.

Our new CD, Princess Revolution! teaches girls to be their own heroes, not helpless maidens. Bloomingdales recently held a Moey's Princess Ball in celebration of our new CD, where girls came dressed as beautiful princesses and danced along with Moey. There's always a different themed party going on at Moey's Music Party, teaching children valuable lessons with fun and catchy tunes.

You can find some examples from our DVD/classes/concerts on our YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/moeysmusicparty

Sunshine Printables Announcement Card

The first Etsy shop, Sunshine Printables is run by a West Coast Canadian. Here's some interesting information about Sasha...

I live in Port Moody, B.C. with my husband, 17 month old daughter Evey and our kitty Winston! I am a teacher and have honed my graphic design skills by sponsoring my school's yearbook program for several years. We are currently awaiting the arrival of our second child, and while on maternity leave with our first, I decided to take the plunge and open up my Etsy shop, Sunshine Printables.

I create customized birthday, bridal shower and wedding invitations, birth announcements and other printables for all of life's amazing moments! My clients choose a design listing and provide me with their photos and information and I customize a high resolution digital file for them to take to the printer of their choice (or I can also print and ship them).

Prize: Sasha is offering one of you a free custom invitation, birth announcement or holiday card (coming soon), that's a gift worth $15-18CDN!

Discount: From now until July 31, Sasha at Sunshine Printables is offering a 10% discount on any customized digital design in my shop with the code "ZOO2012".

Bird On A Line Monogrammed Luggage Tags

Birds on A Line Etsy shop should sound familiar as Sandy graciously sent me two "Zooized" luggage tags. I love monogrammed items! Read about what I had to say in The Zoo's Mailbox, June 26, 2012 and in Sandy's words below.

A great gift idea for the new couple, bridesmaids or as special gift for yourself. The set of two tags comes packaged in a little cello sleeve for easy gift-giving or add a little extra flair by attaching a tag to your shower gift. Our large, colorful and durable tags will make your bags stand out from the crowd!

I first started my Etsy shop with photo luggage tags featuring photos of your pets or kids but they were very time consuming to make. I started doing custom orders for friends and when one of them suggested the tags to attach to a tote bag for a destination wedding, I realized I really enjoyed creating designs and thought that the wedding tags would make a great personalized shower gift.

All of my items are made in-house by me so turn around is super fast! If you need a last minute gift that looks like you planned it for months, just let me know. I try to get all my orders out the door within 48 hours.

Prize: Sandy is offering the winner a choice of one product from their shop. If you pick a set of luggage tags, that's a gift worth $28!

What Happens When We Die and Other Questions?

I'm not talking about what happens to us when we die. That would be morbid and this is Monday so happy, happy.

As I was enjoying my weekly "Get out of Jail for One Hour" break (I went to Laz House of course!), I got to thinking (never a good sign and safest when done in the shower).

What would happen to my blog?

No More Blog

  • Who would notify the winner? Or better yet, who would pick the winner?
  • What about my Alexa rating?
  • My multi-million dollar sponsors?
  • Would you think that I had abandoned you (I hope you know that I wouldn't)?

And most importantly, where would you go to fill your daily quota of totally useless and mundane information of which my content is endless?

I started to feel verklempt. I was finding it difficult to drive through the pouring tears. The constant sweeping motion required to make my eyes useful was inhibiting my ability to drive. I was drowning in a puddle of salt water. I had to pull over.

Okay, seriously though, I was a bit concerned.

When I got home and shared my whoes with Ed, he set me straight. He assured me that all would continue on as it was without me.

I might as well just say good-bye now.

----------------------------------------o----------------------------------------

So I call myself "PR Friendly" and as far as I'm concerned that means that I don't swear in writing on my blog. Swearing and using proper adult words for body parts are not the same thing. Right?

I'll let you be the judge.

The Kids are two and a half. We must talk about body parts 5,420,912 times a day.

The other day, we were talking about female body parts and Artemis looked down at her chest, back up at me and then down again. I asked her what she was thinking and she said "Moles".

Given her questionable genetics, yes, they might just end up as such. Poor girl.

----------------------------------------o----------------------------------------

The Kids like to categorize people based on their gender. In order to do that, you need to know what's between a person's legs. We've taught them the proper words and they like to use them all.the.time with everyone.they.see.

I might just have the World Record for: Number of Times in one day that a person has stated "Yes, Bob the Builder is a Boy".

----------------------------------------o----------------------------------------

So, did I need to word things such that I didn't use the proper names or should I just have come out and said "It"?

What do your Kids Say?

RFF: I Pooped My Pants (But Not Yesterday)

I know what you're thinking.

You're thinking:

At the ripe old age of four, everyone has an accident once in a while. Especially considering if it was on the day that you moved into your new house and your parents were neglecting you busy unloading and couldn't get you to the toilet on time. It happens.

Sure. But what if your parents shared this little piece of news with perspective mates and new friends?

Still okay?

Didn't think so.

Thankfully, there's therapy for those embarrassing moments (it kind of sounds like I'm about to launch into some advertisement about feminine products).

As part of my self-prescribed embarrassment therapy (of which I am a frequent client), I thought that I'd just shout it from the rooftops.

I POOPED MY PANTS!

There, I feel better now. Okay, not really.

In fact, not at all.

Did I just admit that "I Popped My Pants?"

I guess it could be worse.

I could have been talking about yesterday.

Get Caught up in the Series, it's Addictive!

The Plan: Conquering Dog Overpopulation in Chiapas, Mexico

As I mentioned in my previous post, cultural and financial issues were inhibiting "our" ability to deal with the overpopulation of dogs in Chiapas, Mexico.

Let me start out by explaining who I'm talking about when I say "our".

Through a network of "friends of friends" a group of ten managed to find each other. Interestingly, there were only four foreigners in the bunch. We had all been trying to make a dent in the problem using our own limited resources. We found strength in numbers.

We got organized; appointed a president, created a mission statement (Education, Sterilization, Euthanization and Rescue -- in that order), met with the Mayor (this alone took several months) and received permission to set up a table in the zocalo for the purposes of educating the populace and selling some of our wares donated by local artisans.

One of the members got in touch with a friend in the USA and they in turn got in touch with a big American firm that provides *free sterilization clinics.

ed Assisting with Phoenix's Neutering
Ed is assisting with the neuter of Phoenix.

*They pay for the plane ticket and the vets wages. We were responsible for all other costs. The only additional fee was the cost of medication which turned out to be $7/animal. Considering local vets charge $150-200USD per sterilization, this was a deal! I would tell you the name of the "American firm" if I hadn't forgotten the name wasn't sworn to secrecy.

We coordinated over 50 volunteers, sponsors for food, accommodations, evening activities, transportation, facility rental, the list goes on. It was a big, well thought out and organized affair. Eight months in the making.

Bruce the Vet, a Canadian (small world) arrived in tow with a representative from "Humane Society International" in Washington, D.C, two vets from Monterrey (a two-day drive away) and some local vets.

The local vets came because Bruce offered to educate them in the quick, easy and less invasive (and in turn, less expensive) methods of sterilization.

It was a win-win-win.

We were ready to change the world.

You know the adage, "If you build it, they will come"? Translated into Spanish it reads, I'd love something for free as long as you're willing to do all the work and you...

CAN'T neuter my Male!

Yes, the culture is that macho. We could have all the females we wanted but we had to catch them and then care for them (for one week afterwards). At which time, we could return them to the streets their owners.

Our dedication to the cause remained unfaltered. We rounded up the poor souls and worked into the night.

Ed was fortunate enough to assist with Reina's sterilization surgery and I was there for her recovery. A unique opportunity that is not available in Canada.

Tzite Sterilization Clinic Chiapas Mexico
I'm in the top left hand corner wearing pink. Perfect colour for the bleed and defecate everywhere recovery room.

When all was said and done, 134 dogs and cats were spayed and neutered over three days. Someone did the math and apparently, over 5 years, that one clinic alone prevented 144,000 new animals from being born. That's a lot of mutts.

The Mayor happened to be holding a recognition ceremony that week so we were all on hand to receive our certificates for "Bettering the City".

You can see Phoenix and I kneeling in the front of the top picture.

The clinic was a great start but if we wanted to have a long-term impact on overpopulation, we had to come up with sustainable and local ways to make a difference.

On to the next challenge... Money.
